Ways to Create Lasting Changes in your Life and Discover True Happiness – Developing a Healthy Routine
Routine

By Happy Herschel Lazaroff
A routine of self care, focusing on a higher power and love, can provide true happiness. We are all born free – from routine, habits, or programming. However, as we go through life, we begin to acquire patterns of behavior, healthy and unhealthy. While we inherently know what is good and not good or us, transforming it from knowledge into action can seem difficult, particularly during the healing process.
There are two steps to establishing – or re-establishing – a healthy routine.
Step 1. Stop the behavior
Transformation occurs only when you stop the behavior.
Once you realize that the undesired behavior is a function of your inner beliefs and acquired desires, you have the power to acknowledge, and stop it. Not only that, stop viewing the behavior as something to fix and focus on the behavior you wish to have instead. As you withdraw from the old pattern and concentrate on the good feelings the new habit will bring, you begin to see that you have a choice. With practice, it becomes integrated as a new belief. You will is also very powerful.
For example, receiving information that smoking will kill you, or that too much salt is causing a heart condition, may be enough for you to stop smoking or cut down on salt. The knowledge gives you the power to change your desire and to persevere where perhaps you couldn’t in the past. It is important for the new habit to go from your mind, down your throat and into your heart. The more you can picture what you want to become, the more you can feel it and see it, the more you will become it.
You can’t change the behavior unless you feel it.
What if I’ve been out of any kind of routine for a long time and don’t think I can stop?
People may need some kind of support mechanism. Of the many options available, these
are just a few:
meditate, connect to your higher power
prayer
a 12-step program
a coach that inspires you
Step 2. Create Routine
What is it about routine that gives us true happiness?
Each day the sun comes up, the rooster crows, they never arrive late. They are in tune with a higher power. We are cyclical and diurnal beings, also designed to follow a supernal time clock, one that gives us a sense of perpetuity. As we tackle our daily responsibilities through the routines we create, we feel accomplished. When we don’t have a routine, we feel lethargic and unaccomplished.
How do I get into a routine that serves us better?
First, let’s replace the word ‘routine’ with Prescription For A Healthy Life. Routine then becomes a champion on our mission to be a supernal being, one that is a positive and contributing force in society. This new definition also helps maintain a positive and accurate self worth. Each person’s routine will be different.
To create your routine, list your expectations or goals for each of the following three areas: sleep, self interests, and work. Write down everything you plan to do in each area over the next year, month, and week. Next, plan your daily calendar. It’s best to use 20 to 30 minute increments with a 5 minute break in between to rejuvenate – stretch, hold acupressure points, do hand yoga, whatever works best for you.
By deliberately taking actions each day, routine emerges, thereby actualizing your intentions.
One of my clients was a therapist. When she was with her clients, she exuded warmth and happiness and helped many of her clients, but her practice was shrinking. However, outside the doors of her practice, her life was helter-skelter. She had fallen between her own cracks. She was down on herself because her marriage had fallen apart and she was mired into bad eating patterns. She came to me for xx face-to-face sessions. Once she realized that her old patterns of getting on everyone’s nerves including herself were a function of her sense of self worth, she started to have hope. She began taking small steps –exercising on a daily basis at a nearby fitness center – and became more positive about herself. As she became more positive, she attracted new clients. Her new routine created a new inner dynamic, creating an outer movement toward productivity.
Hope is the ember that fuels a fire of a new desire. Routine keeps it burning.
